Abstract U današnje vrijeme gotovo je neizbježno korištenje digitalnih medija. Najviše pozitivnih aspekata nalazimo u igranju videoigara. Neka djeca koja pohađaju vrtić više vremena provode s odgojiteljima nego s roditeljima, stoga odgojitelji imaju veliku ulogu u razvoju medijske pismenosti djece.
Abstract (english) Nowadays, the use of digital media is almost inevitable. In order to fit into society or get a job, one needs to have at least basic computer skills. For that reason, it is necessary to develop media competence from an early age. Today, children are surrounded by digital media such as television, computers and smartphones on a daily basis. In order for children to use the media properly, they need to learn how they function, how they are used and what is their purpose. Anyone can turn on the television and let children watch cartoons; however, only an expert person can teach a child how to properly use media. Certain skills and knowledge are required for critical reflection on the media contents and their evaluation. The aim of this paper is to present both the positive and negative aspects of digital media use. Many experts are researching negative impacts so as to prevent their occurrence. If quality content is not chosen, watching television cannot have a positive effect on people, let alone children. Excessive television viewing can cause severe health problems, result in reduced academic achievement, and introduce behavioral problems. Excessive violence in the media leads to aggressive behavior towards peers and things. The most positive aspects can be found in playing video games. Playing encourages hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes and decision-making, spatial orientation, visual acuity, detail perception, communication and social skills. In order for the positive effects of digital media to be more frequent than the negative ones, children need good role models, and these are primarily their parents. That is why parents need to adjust their media habits, talk to their children about the content they watch, and be media literate. Some children who attend kindergarten spend more time with educators than with their parents, so educators play a major role in developing children’s media literacy.
