Abstract (english) The main goal of teaching Croatian language is to enable pupils to communicate with their language, which then enables them to master contents of all school subjects (Nastavni plan i program za osnovnu skolu, 2006). Language is abstract system, therefore, language should be mastered within four language activites: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Basic language activities are listening and speaking, while reading and writing students learn at school. Pavlicevic-Franic (2018) states that listening is dynamic process. It is human ability to receive and adopt audible elements of language. After listening, next step is speaking and then reading. Reading is complex process of receiving informations in written form and it depends on several skills to master (Pavlicevic-Franic, 2005). Writing is language activity which is mastered in school and it demands knowing of alphabet letter system. This paper conducts research on reading competence of pupils in elementary school, precisely on third and fourth grades. Research was carried out in elementary schools in Zagreb and Slavonija. The main goal of research was to question reading competence of elementary school pupils by gender and age and understanding of different types of works (depends on functional style). There were three types of works, of text. With these types of work, pupils were also filling up survey about reading habits. Pupils achieved best results in understanding of popular-scientific work. In some variables, girls were better than boys, for example, girls achieved better results in understanding of literary work, while boys achieved better results in understanding of conversational type of text (comic book). Comparing age groups, fourth grades were better in understanding of comic book type of text, while third grades were better in understanding of literary work. Inquiring reading habits, it was found that third grades are spending much more time on computers than four grades, also third grades read more literary works for school than four grades. However, it is surprising data that 62,5 % of pupils reads books outside of mandatory books for school.
