Picture books have a big influence on a child’s development as they are one of the child’s first contacts with literature. Comic books also have many positive aspects of developing a child’s understanding of language, symbols and the world around them, even if not as prominent in work with kids. This work describes a process of the creation of an original comic picture book and the activity with a group of kids, where they attempt to create their own story based on the illustrations. Taking the elements of picture books and comics, the goal was to merge the best of both art mediums by taking the elements of picture books and comics. This includes aesthetical value and story structure typical for picture books and the freedom of frames, composition and text placement alike those in comics. This type of picture book can serve as a child’s introduction to comic books. The illustrations are drawn digitally using a simple style similar to those in animated movies. They contain the elements characteristic for European, American and Asian comic books. The comic picture book has two versions: without text and with text. The version with text was made to show the text of the story in the context of the illustrations and to further introduce the children with the structure of the text in comic books. The version without text was used in the activity with children. Six preschool children (three boys and three girls) were given eighteen illustrations without text or order. Their task was to put the illustrations in an order which they felt the story progressed in as well as to think of the accompanying text. The final story differentiated from the original and the order of illustrations was completely changed. The children also named the characters and their surroundings. All of the kids participated equally and the activity lasted for twenty minutes.
