The process of hospitalization is almost always a painful and difficult process so any unnecessary hospitalization should be avoided. When it is necessary, however, and the life of a child is endangered in the way that it requires special medical care and supervision, the process of hospitalization is unavoidable. In order for the child to not feel traumatized during its stay in a hospital (since hospitals provide feelings of fear and panic because of their completely unnatural environment), hospital kindergartens are being opened in hospitals around the world, and also in Croatia. The goal of hospital kindergartens is the humanization of the medical process for the child as well as giving emotional support to the child, but also to the parents. For that goal to be accomplished, the role of medical staff and teachers is very important. With their support, understanding and professionalism they can assure that the child's stay in the hospital goes by almost painlessly. Children should feel safe and protected in every institution and they should always be treated with high levels of positive emotions. As a part of this thesis, a research has been carried out at the pediatrics department and at the hospital kindergarten of the General Hospital of Zadar which has been opened in 2013.
