Očuvanje i unaprjeđenje tjelesnoga i mentalnoga zdravlja postaje zahtjev suvremenoga načina života.
Abstract (english) By health we do not only mean the bodily component, but it also applies to psyche and mental health. Preserving and improving physical and mental health is becoming a requirement of the modern way of life. Thus, it is important to see the connection between physical activity and maintenance and protection of good mental health. The aim of this paper is to analyze the findings from the literature they deal with physical activity as one of the factors contributing to an individual’s psychological health, and based on the conducted research to see their connection. A questionnaire was used for this purpose by Susan Harter: Self - Perception Profile for Children which contained three separate subscales which examine athletic competencies, physical appearance, and global self-esteem. A short was also used a questionnaire to find out who is involved in a sport and who is not, and to what extent, using the Likert scale of 5 degrees. The study involved 63 students from 4 grades of one primary schools in Zagreb. About that is 28 girls and 35 boys. In processing the obtained data Likert scale we can conclude that most students are engaged in some form sports activities. When we look at the gender difference, we conclude that students are male populations are more likely to engage in sports activities than the female population. Considering perception of athletic competence, the higher the score is in students who play a sport. Code perceptions of physical appearance, an interesting fact is that the perception of the student's own appearance that not engaged in any sporting activity, greater than those who rarely engage in sporting activity, often and very often. As for global self-esteem, the interesting fact is that it is self-esteem is higher among students who do not engage in sports activities than students who are in to some extent engaged in some sporting activities. The conclusion is that under the influence of general social values in sport success and competitiveness become more important than education itself. That leads to the point that instead of acquiring knowledge, skills, raising abilities and adopting morals values, in the first place among the goals, only the achievement of high results is increasingly emphasized and success, which should by no means be the goal of engaging in kinesiological activities.
