The incidence of child neglect in early childhood with regard to the assessment of preschool teachers and students of preschool education Younger children because of its intense growth and development are in vulnerable position when it comes to violence against them, as well as neglect. Neglect is a widespread problem that brings with it fatal consequences on all aspects of child development and for this reason prevention is very important, but also an intervention when neglect is already present in children's life. The aim of this paper is to investigate the incidence of child neglect in early childhood. The research presented in the paper was carried out in 2018 in the kindergarten "Vrtuljak" and at the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb. The aim of the research was to examine the incidence of child neglect in early childhood with regard to the assessment of preschool teachers and students of preschool education. The study included 46 preschool teachers and 49 students of preschool education. For the purposes of this study, the following instruments were used: a questionnaire of socio-demographic characteristics (gender, occupation), scale for estimating the incidence of child neglect and competence assessment scale. From the results it can be concluded that neglecting early and preschool children is relatively common. The results also show that despite the fact that most preschool teachers and students consider themselves competent to work with neglected children, only 65.1% of preschool teachers are considered to be educated in the area of neglect. These results points to the need for educating all preschool teachers about this problem and the importance of lifelong learning so that preschool teachers are always ready to protect children's rights and child welfare. The results show that 76.7% of preschool teachers and 93.8% of students are willing to report neglect of children. From this, it can be seen the importance of educating the preschool teachers about their obligation to report neglect and protect children from violence. Literature review has showed a very small number of researches related to the problem of neglecting early and preschool children. Considering the fact that younger age is one of the risk factors for the neglect and that children up to three years are the most neglected and most vulnerable, in the future it would be desirable to more fully investigate the presence of this problem when it comes to children of early and preschool age.
