Postoji takozvani receptivni i aktivni pristup u glazboterapiji. Ona brine o mentalnom zdravlju čovjeka i koristi se kreativnim procesom umjetničkog stvaranja s ciljem unapređenja fizičkog, mentalnog i emocionalnog stanja svih dobi.
Abstract (english) Music has great influence on people and some consider it to be a whole aspect of life. It is especially valuable in working with children with special needs. Playing instruments, various improvisation exercises, listening to music both actively and passively, singing and dancing are all parts of music therapy. Research has shown that music enhances cognitive abilities, improves psychomotorics and boosts a child's social and emotional development. Using music therapy to help children with special needs means utilizing music as a source of relaxation and reassurance, using it to raise self-esteem and help improve speech, and general communication and socialization skills. Burić Sarapa and Katušić define music therapy as a discipline which uses the language of music in a client-therapist relationship as a means within a sistematic process of intervention with preventive, rehabilitative and therapeutic aims. In music therapy, there are the so called receptive and active approaches. When speaking about the active approach, there are several different methods such as the Orff method and creative music therapy. The receptive approach also offers numerous methods, but the most prominent ones are the Bonny method and Musica Medica. Those are the most notable ones because they seem to be the most applicable to all children with special needs. Art therapy means the non verbal expressing of thoughts and emotions, and is based on the idea that different art forms can affect the quality of life. Art therapy takes care of one's mental health and uses the creative procces with the aim of elevating the physical, mental and emotional state in every age group.
