Abstract
This paper presents the data collected through research conducted by the author and dealing with the use of new media as a useful instrument in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). The thesis proposes the definition of different kinds of media, including their positive and negative aspects, and the impact they may have on children. Media competences and media education, whose presence in the primary school curriculum should be enhanced, are also discussed. The thesis further presents the research: the applied research methods and research structure, description of participants, and descriptive data analysis. For the purpose of examining the usage of new media in EFL classrooms, research was conducted on a sample of 95 participants (22 pre-service and in-service EFL teachers and 73 primary school pupils). Based on the analysis of research data regarding media usage in English language classrooms, it could be concluded that new media are not used to their full potential.

Ovaj diplomski rad daje prikaz rezultata prikupljenih istraživanjem koje je provela autorica, a koji se odnose na uporabu novih medija kao korisnog instrumenta u poučavanju engleskoga kao stranoga jezika. Na početku rada dane su definicije različitih vrsta medija, uključujući njihove pozitivne i negativne strane te njihov mogući utjecaj na djecu. Rad također raspravlja i o medijskim kompetencijama i medijskom odgoju, koji bi trebali u većoj mjeri biti zastupljeni u osnovnoškolskom kurikulu. U radu se nadalje daje prikaz istraživanja: primijenjene istraživačke metode i struktura istraživanja, opis uzorka istraživanja i deskriptivna analiza dobivenih podataka. Kako bi se ispitala uporaba novih medija u nastavi engleskoga kao stranog jezika, za potrebe ovoga rada provedeno je istraživanje na uzorku od 95 sudionika (od čega su 22 sudionika učitelji i budući učitelji a 73 ispitanika su osnovnoškolska djeca). Na temelju rezultata dobivenih provedenim istraživanjem o uporabi medija u poučavanju engleskoga jezika, moglo bi se zaključiti da se mediji ne upotrebljavaju u onolikoj mjeri u kolikoj bi to bilo moguće.
