Abstract Uvod: Komplementarna i alternativna medicina (KAM) predstavlja bilo koje zdravstvene tretmane koji nisu priznati u okviru suvremene, konvencionalne medicine jer za većinu postupaka nema dovoljno znanstvenih dokaza.
Cilj istraživanja: Ispitati stavove studenata sestrinstva u Republici Hrvatskoj o KAM.
Abstract (english) Background: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) refers to any health treatments not recognized within modern, conventional medicine, as most practices lack sufficient scientific evidence. There are several scientific criticisms of CAM, such as reliance on evidence often based on tradition or lower levels of scientific proof. Safety concerns arise since some CAM practices can be harmful. CAM does not undergo the same level of regulatory oversight as medications and medical products.
Aim: To examine the attitudes of nursing students in the Republic of Croatia towards CAM. To investigate whether there are differences between students from continental and Mediterranean Croatia, as well as those with and without work experience, and differences between university and professional study students.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among nursing students in the Republic of Croatia from December 2023 to February 2024. Data were collected via an online questionnaire tailored for the purposes of this thesis and distributed through the social network Facebook and student services of higher education institutions.
Results: The study included 364 participants (10,00% response rate). The majority are from the continental part of Croatia, with 202 (55.49%), while 162 (44.50%) are from the Mediterranean part of Croatia. Students generally tend to have a neutral attitude toward CAM. The study revealed statistically significant differences in the attitudes of nursing students based on regional affiliation, with students from Mediterranean Croatia having more positive attitudes (p < 0.05). There are no statistically significant differences in attitudes between students with work experience and those without (p > 0.05), nor between students in university and vocational programs (p > 0.05). No correlation was found between self-assessed knowledge of complementary and alternative medicine and the attitude toward CAM (RO = -0.02436, p = 0.6433).
Conclusion: A difference in attitudes among students based on the region of Croatia they come from (continental and Mediterranean) was observed, with students from continental Croatia having more positive attitudes. However, no difference was found regarding work experience or type of study program. Also, there is no correlation between self-assessment of knowledge and inclination towards CAM. For future research, it is recommended to investigate in more detail the factors influencing students' attitudes towards CAM, while education should emphasize the importance of integrating CAM into curricula to increase students' awareness and understanding.
