Drugi riječima, više izraženih simptoma poremećaja hranjenja imaju sportašice, pojedinci s niskim samopoštovanjem, niskim zadovoljstvom tjelesnim izgledom i visokim negativnim reakcijama na nesavršenstvo.
Abstract (english) This study investigated symptoms of eating disorders among young male and female athletes. And its relationship to gender, type of sport, body image satisfaction, perfectionism and self-esteem. Eating disorders often occur during adolescence and early adulthood, therefore a large amount of research can be found on this population. However, eating disorders have rarely been studied in male and female athletes. Disordered eating refers to a spectrum of attitudes and behavior like preoccupation with body weight and shape, food restriction, and dieting as well as bingeing, vomiting and the abuse of diuretics, laxatives and diet pills. In this study, the role of gender, type of sport, body image satisfaction, self-esteem, striving for perfection and negative reactions to imperfection were analyzed. Correlation and contribution were used to analyze these variables. The sample consisted of 294 athletes, of whom 147 were male and 147 female. For the purpose of this research Eating Attitudes Test, Body Areas Satisfaction Scale, Rosenberg Self- Esteem Scale, Multidimensional Inventory of Perfectionism in Sport and a general data questionnaire, which was made only for the purpose of this research, were applied. The results showed a statistically significant correlation between the symptoms of eating disorders with gender, self-esteem, body image satisfaction and negative reactions to imperfection. Therefore male athletes, individuals with low self-esteem, low body image satisfaction and high negative reactions to imperfection show more symptoms of eating disorders. Gender and self-esteem have been a significant predictor in explaining the symptoms of eating disorders, whereby self-esteem contributes most to the explanation of the total variance of the criteria. Practical implications of this research will be best served by experts in their work with athletes.
