Abstract (english) The importance of studying mathematical abilities and their processing in the human mind is confirmed by the findings of longitudinal studies: mathematical ability at age 7 is related to intelligence, longer-term education and later socioeconomic status (Ritchie and Bates, 2013). In recent years, the study of mental arithmetic has been well represented in the literature and new findings are trying to formulate theories that could explain and link them. Walsh's Theory of Magnitude (ATOM) suggests that dimensions that can be considered in terms bigger/less than (such as quantity, space, time, brightness - that is, quantitative dimensions) share common mechanisms, whose general size representation is located in the parietal cortex (Bueth and Walsh, 2009). Predictions derived from this theory are that there should be interaction between analogue dimensions. Also, Meier, Robinson and Clore (2004) have shown how the word valence is translated to the dimension of brightness: participants responded more quickly to positive words when they were presented in white and more quickly to negative words when they were presented in black. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of emotional stimuli on the speed of estimating the accuracy of arithmetic tasks. We expect that addition tasks will be solved faster after a presentation of positive words and subtracting tasks after a presentation of negative words. Results of this experiment showed statistically significant main effect of arithmetic operation, with addition tasks being solved faster than subtracting tasks. Additionally, interaction between word valence and arithmetic operation was also significant. However, contrary to what was expected, addition tasks were solved faster after presenting a negative word than after presenting a positive word, while the difference in reaction time for subtracting tasks presented after positive and negative words was not significant. This paper discusses results of this study and its implications for future research in the field.
