Abstract (english) Many sources, both ancient and modern, have stated that the women of Augustus circle had discrete influence in their spheres. This thesis attempts to determine the degree of autonomy and influence that the women of Augustus circle had, and also examine the factors that may have contributed to their socio-political influence. In trying to establish the extent and nature of the influence of women in Augustus circle, the ancient sources (literary), in conjunction with modern scholarly views, were critically examined. In attempting to determine the factors of influence and autonomy these women had, the thesis looks also at a legal and a socio-historical angle. On the surface, women of Augustus circle did seem to enjoy a wider range of freedoms, power and influence than other Roman women before or after. On the other hand, this is shown in exemptions that Augustus made in law, also literary sources write more of them then woman in previous or after periods. It is clear from the sources, that these women also had restrictions laid upon them, and that the patriarchal framework still lessen their influence. When they over-stepped the accepted bounds, they were vilified by the ancient historians, and often become negatively portrayed. Whether these women truly deserved their vilification, or whether it can simply be ascribed to the bias of the ancient writers, was also explored throughout thesis.
