Abstract S obzirom na starenje stanovništva i posljedično povećanje broja bolesnika kojima će biti potrebna palijativna skrb, Svjetskazdravstvena organizacija smatra kako će ona biti globalno zdravstveno pitanje.
Abstract (english) Given the ageing of the population and the consequent increase in the number of patients requiring palliative care, the World Health Organization considers it to be a global health issue. Numerous global researches point to a lack of awareness of palliative care, which can be a key obstacle to future development.
The aim of this study was to examine attitudes and awareness of the community of the city where there are no specialized palliative care services and the city where such services exist. Specific goals are to determine the difference in sensitivity with regard to age, gender, education and comparison of the obtained results between the two cities.
A lengthy trial was conducted in March and April 2019, on a population of 200 adults older than 20 years old from Koprivnica and the same number from Čakovec. The information was collectedby an anonymous questionnaire “Palliative care awarenessand attitudes of the community”, which was designed for this purpose.
The results of the research showed that there was a statistically significant gender difference, with female respondents having a higher proportion of right answers (p=0.000) on average. Also, the older age group showed a higher level of knowledge than the younger (p=0.001), while the respondents with only completed secondary education had the least knowledge of palliative care (p=0.001).
Since this survey is only one in Croatia and covers only two cities, further research is needed in this area to compare the results obtained. At the community level, knowledge, awareness and access to palliative care services should also be expanded to strengthen individuals, engage the community, and ultimately achieve the goals set out in international palliative care strategies.
