Abstract (english) The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of religiousness and marital quality in explaining parental sense of competence, and to examine the mediating effect of marital quality in the relationship between religiousness and parental sense of competence in a sample of men and women. Based on the Belsky model of determinants of parental behavior (1984), according to which the experience and quality of parenthood is influenced by three groups of factors: parental characteristics, child characteristics and family and wider social context; a model of a mediation effect of marital quality on the relationship between religiousness and parental sense of competence was set for the purpose of this study. The Religiousness Questionnaire (Ljubotina, 2004) and the Scale of Joint Religious Activities (Mahoney et al., 1999) were used to measure religiousness, the Quality Marriage Index (Norton, 1983) and the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Busby et al., 1995) were used to measure marital quality, the Parental Sense of Competence Scale (Johnston and Mash, 1989; Croatian translation Reić Ercegovac, 2010) was used to measure parental sense of competence, and a questionnaire designed for this research was used to measure the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants. The study involved 408 participants, of whom 228 were women and 180 were men. The results showed that men and women don’t differ in individual religiousness, but that men report more frequent joint religious activities with their wives, that they are more satisfied with their marriage, that they assess better marital adjustment, and that they report higher levels of parental sense of competence in relation to women. To test the mediating effect of marital quality on the relationship between religiousness and parental sense of competence, mediation analyses were conducted in the Process Macro program for SPSS (Hayes, 2012), four on the sample of men and four on the sample of women. The results of the conducted mediation analyses confirm the assumed mediation effect on the men sample, while in the women sample this effect was insignificant only in the model that tested the indirect effect of individual religiousness, through marital satisfaction, on parental sense of competence.
