Abstract Romantični odnosi čine vitalan dio čovjekovog života jer zadovoljavaju temeljne ljudske potrebe za pripadanjem i bliskošću.
Abstract (english) Romantic relationships have crucial importance in one's lifespan because they satisfy the most important human needs, ones for intimacy, and belonging. Intimacy, as one of the main characteristics of romantic relationships, is realized via self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is a process of exchanging information about oneself, including personal opinions, thoughts, and past experiences. Previous research of romantic relationships, so far, has come to valuable findings that help better and comprehensive understanding of it and also have left space for further research. Self-disclosure is correlated with adult attachment but there are still some inconsistencies about correlations with insecure attachments and with different dimensions of self-disclosure and attachment. Furthermore, self-disclosure was correlated with global self-esteem and relationship satisfaction which were both identified as significant correlates. Also, research indicated some inconsistent gender differences in self-disclosure. This study aimed to examine some psychological aspects of self-disclosure, respectively correlations between self-disclosure and attachment dimensions, global self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, and longevity of relationships in young adults. A total of 415 young adults participated in the study. The following questionnaires were used: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), Revised Self-Disclosure Scale (RSDS), Relationship Assessment Scale; RAS and abbreviated version of Experiences in Close Relationship Inventory (IIBV) as a measure of adult attachment. The results of this study indicate that the depth and amount of self-disclosure significantly increase during a longer period of time in a relationship and that there is no significant difference between men and women in self-disclosure. Also, there is a significant positive correlation between self-disclosure and relationship satisfaction, as well as global self-esteem. Avoidant and anxious attachment was found to be correlated with significantly lower levels of self-disclosure.
