Summary Background: One of the major problems affecting the Western world, in particular, is the increase in the number of elderly population in the general population. Therefore, society is primarily looking to develop systems of care and support for the elderly. Technologies and technological systems are being developed that aim to improve the quality of life of older people and enable them to have independence and autonomy as long as possible. One such tool is Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) which implements various technologies (sensors, cameras) into the homes of the elderly, contributing to their greater safety. The use of such technologies may lead to various social or ethical problems. Aim: The aim of the research was to analyze the social and ethical issues of AAL and to understand in detail the perception of interested participants. Methods: We conducted qualitative research through semi-structured interviews with 11 participants from three categories of people who could be potential actors of the AAL system: nurses, elderly, and engineers. Results: The results of the research showed that there is a need to use AAL technology in the form of improving care for the elderly and their quality of life. Nurses and the elderly are concerned about the intentions of such technology to replace the humanness in care by excluding the importance of human warmth and touch. In other words, that might lead to the loss of human contact, which can potentially result in social isolation. Another occurring problem is the technological illiteracy of the elderly. The ethical issue of privacy breach due to constant video surveillance is an issue highlighted by all participants. Conclusion: Considering that the biggest problems found in this study are the lack of human contact, i.e., dehumanization of care and the problem of privacy threats due to the collection of various types of data using sensors and video surveillance, it is extremely important to analyze ethical aspects of developing and using AAL technologies. It follows that it is also important to develop guidelines for the development and use of AAL technologies that will be based on ethical principles and bioethical principles while respecting the fundamental dignity of every human person.
