Ferries usually operate short sea voyages for a combination of passengers, cars and commercial vehicles. Most of these ships are Ro-Ro (roll on – roll off) passenger ships or ferries, where wheeled vehicles enter and exit the ship, which makes cargo handling a fast and easily accessible way of travel for passengers. The capacity of Ro-Ro passenger ships has increased significantly in modern times to accommodate more cars and heavy goods vehicles. Ships often represent an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to other methods of transportation. Providing the ability to transport cargo and passengers, Ro-Ro ships call at ports more often and have shorter voyages. While ship cargo is usually measured in metric tons, cargo on Ro-Ro ships is measured in lane meters, which is calculated by multiplying the length of the cargo in meters by the number of decks and its width in lanes. But despite its commercial success, the Ro-Ro industry has been marked by disturbing accidents involving various types of Ro-Ro vessels, the most dangerous of which are sudden capsizes with catastrophic consequences. In response to these accidents, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a series of amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to ensure that such catastrophic accidents do not happen again.
