Abstract (english) Ablation or retinal detachment is a pathological process in which the sensory part of the retina is separated from the retinal pigment epithelium. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is the most common type of retinal ablation, and is due to the existence of retinal tear. The main purpose of this research was to show the incidence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the County of Dubrovnik-Neretva. The research was done retrospectively from the documentation of the retinal ambulance of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry of the General Hospital of Dubrovnik. This study included 92 examinees (94 eyes) who were in the period of 1.1. 2004 to 31 December 2013, diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. A complete ophthalmic examination and fluorescence angiography were performed. The number of patients ranged from 3 patients in 2007 and 2008 to as many as 21 patients in 2013. The average annual number of patients was 9.4. After the diagnosis was made, 82 (87.23%) patients had an operative procedure for pars plana vitrectomy, 8 (8.5%) had conventional ablation surgery with cerclage and seal, and 4 (4.27%) had no surgical procedure due to high degree of retinal detachment or due to older age, comorbidity and high risk of general anesthesia complications. There were no statistically significant differences in gender. The largest number of patients was in the range of 60-80 years of age (57.4%). There was no statistically significant difference between the age of sexes. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was more common in the left eye. The risk factors were present in total of 51 patients, the most common risk factor being myopia. The visual acuity before surgery was 0.063 and after surgery 0.135. The incidence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in this study was 7.65 new yearly patients per 100,000 inhabitants of the Dubrovnik Neretva County.
