Abstract (english) The vagina represents a tubular genital organ in women which links the external genitalia to the uterus and internal genital organs. Alongside hormones and physiologically present bacteria that create slightly acidic mucus, the uterus has a natural protection against infection. However, certain external factors can lead to the disruption of natural protection, which leads to the infection. The three major vaginal infections are bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis. Vaginal infections are usually suspected and sought during regular gynaecological examinations, when women report changes in discharge, as well as some of the other symptoms. Naturally, symptomatology is not enough to accurately diagnose the disease, but it is also necessary to exclude other diseases of the genital system, and then further pursue diagnostic and treatment procedures depending on the disease itself. The role of a highly educated nurse is to encourage women to regularly visit gynaecologists, as well as to point out the importance of a responsible approach to sexual intercourse. Since the transmission does not necessarily have to be sexual, it is pivotal to educate women about the proper way of life, as well as about the sexual hygiene.
