Abstract (english) Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent disorders of consciousness. Overall, 2% of the adult population has a lifelong disturbance of consciousness, but not epilepsy. The most common image associated with the person with epilepsy is an image of an epileptic seizure that includes intense convulsions, a person’s mental absence, and foaming at the mouth. It is precisely because of this image that people with epilepsy are stigmatized in society. That is why the support of society and family is important to them in order to cope with this disease as easily as possible. But society often lacks understanding and compassion for such people, and they are exposed to discrimination, rejection and social isolation.
The aim of this study was to examine the opinion and attitudes of the population towards people with epilepsy and the relationship of demographic characteristics of respondents to differences in attitudes, then to assess the frequency of factors that affect them. The research was conducted using a specially structured questionnaire for the purposes of this paper, and was distributed through social networks. The sample consisted of 218 participants, mostly female.
The results of the research show that today's society most often has prejudices against patients, which could be solved by better informing and educating the entire population about epilepsy, the most common disease of the neurological system.
Of great importance for understanding epilepsy is education, as well as the influence of the media, information and life experience. It is necessary to accept the disease, work on yourself, take therapy and follow the guidelines for a better life. Epilepsy is difficult to treat disease, but with normal life is in most people possible.
