Palliative medicine is an interdisciplinary approach to medical care aimed at alleviating suffering and providing an optimal quality of life for patients with serious or life-threatening conditions. Key components of palliative medicine include relief of symptoms (eg pain management, nausea treatment), assistance in organizing nursing and social services, and psychological support to patients and their families. It has been proven that palliative care improves the symptoms and quality of life of patients, reduces the number of hospital admissions. It is a growing multidisciplinary field focused on the complex needs of supportive care of patients with advanced and life-limiting disease. Palliative care is delivered by an interdisciplinary team, and its goal is to provide comprehensive and simultaneous care to patients in addition to primary teams. This care can be provided along with any treatment aimed at disease or alleviation of symptoms. No therapy is excluded when the patient is receiving palliative care, if its goal is to help the patient. Palliative care can be provided in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, home care, or visiting patients in their homes. The Republic of Croatia is part of the National Strategy for Health Development 2012.g-2020.godine which involves the intensive development of palliative care because it is a long-standing health problem due to inadequate conditions in hospitals and insufficient number of beds. In the following, I will present two cases; a patient with lung cancer and a patient diagnosed with a muscle neuron disease.
