Abstract U prosincu 2019. godine u Wuhanu u Kini pojavila se nova vrsta koronavirusa.
Abstract (english) In December 2019, a new type of coronavirus appeared in Wuhan, China. The disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 was officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization. Incubation is usually 1-14 days, and the source of infection is an infected person. The clinical presentation of the disease can be asymptomatic with mild symptoms, but also severe with fatal outcomes. The gold standard for diagnosis is RT-PCR. Treatment depends on the clinical presentation, while the prevention of the spread of the disease is pivotal. There are several types of vaccines against COVID 19 in the Republic of Croatia. All vaccines have mostly mild and moderate side effects that disappear within a few days. Nurses play an important role in disease prevention and health, and they educate the population about this new disease.
The aim of this thesis was to examine the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students on COVID-19 and vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The research was conducted from March 8, 2021 to May 3 2021 via social networks. An anonymous online questionnaire consisting of 19 questions was used for this study. The sample comprised 345 participants. Socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age, year of nursing studies) and attitudes, opinions and knowledge about COVID-19 and the vaccine against COVID-19 were examined. The majority of participants were female and aged between 20 to 25 years.
The results indicate that the majority of participants did not have COVID-19 and more than half of the participants expressed vaccination hesitancy. Most participants affected by COVID-19 lost their taste and smell and felt tired. Most participants rate their knowledge of COVID-19 and the vaccine against it as „good“ and most of them cite media and Internet as primary data sources. A majority of participants would recommend vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 to their family. Furthermore, most consider COVID-19 to be a severe disease and they believe vaccinated individuals can become ill following the vaccination. Also, most participants felt that the side effects of the vaccine were milder than the symptoms of the disease itself. According to their claims, most students would be vaccinated if the pharmaceutical industry made a more effective vaccine.
From the results obtained, we can conclude that most students do not want to be vaccinated, but would be vaccinated if the pharmaceutical industry made a more effective vaccine. Due to all the above, it is very important to educate students on different aspects of COVID-19, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of vaccination.
