AIM: To demonstrate the importance of implanting permanent pacemakers as a therapeutic method in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and improving the quality of the patient’s life and accordingly its prolongation. The aim is to collect data from the HIS and medical documentation (medical history), analyse it and present obtained results for the implantation of permanent pacemaker at the General Hospital "Dr. Tomislav Bardek" Koprivnica within two calendar years: 2019 and 2020. METHODS: The retrospective study included all patients on the level of the entire hospital who had a permanent pacemaker implanted. The presented results were obtained by collecting data in the period from 01.01.2019 to 31.12.2019, as well as by means of collecting data in the period from 01.01.2020 to 31.12.2020. Data is grouped according to differentiation in gender, age of the patients, types of pacemakers (single-chamber pacemaker or dual-chamber pacemaker), whether it is the first installation or replacement of an existing pacemaker, list of diagnoses requiring pacemaker implantation, average duration of hospitalization and methods / types of discharge. No survey questionnaire was designed for this research. Descriptive statistics using Microsoft Excel was used in data processing. RESULTS: In the past 2019 and 2020, 190 permanent pacemakers were implanted. Out of the total number, 100 were men and 90 women. In both years pacemaker was to the largest extend implanted in patients older than 66 years of age. A total of 125 single-chamber pacemakers were implanted, whereas dual-chamber pacemakers were implanted in 65 patients. 87% of patients were hospitalized in the cardiology department. Out of the total number (N 190), 16 pulse generator replacements were recorded, whereas the other 174 patients had the first installation of permanent pacemaker. The most common indication for implantation is complete/total atrioventricular block (grade III). The results indicate that the average duration of hospitalization is less than 5 days and patients are discharged for home care. No deaths were recorded in 2019, while in 2020 one death was recorded. CONCLUSION: Koprivnica Hospital records an increasing number of implanted permanent pacemakers. It is a routine operation where hospitalization takes less than 5 days. It is mostly implanted in elderly patients whereas single-chamber pacemakers are more frequently implanted compared to dual-chamber pacemakers. With quality and conscientious work of all health professionals, quality care of patients with implanted pacemakers is guaranteed.
