Abstract Ubodni incident je perkutana ozljeda kože uzrokovana oštrom medicinskom opremom kontaminiranom krvlju ili drugim tjelesnim tekućinama.
Abstract (english) A needlestick/sharp injury represents a percutaneous skin injury caused by sharp medical equipment contaminated with blood or other body fluids. Healthcare workers are exposed to the risk of this type of incident on a daily basis. A large number of pathogens can be transmitted in this way, and the most common and most dangerous infections are hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Factors influencing the occurrence of a needlestick injury can be related to the workplace, but also to the personal characteristics. By implementing the prescribed measures, the risk of infections is reduced to a minimum, so that immunization, education and adequate reporting are carried out. A needlestick injury, in addition to potentially causing blood-borne infections, also affects an individual’s mental health.
In order to investigate the knowledge, attitudes and exposure of nursing professionals in hospital settings about the needlestick injury, a semi-structured interview was constructed. The study involved thirteen respondents who had a record of a needlestick or sharps incident and gave descriptive answers to the questions asked.
The research provided insight into the circumstances under which the needlestick incident occurred. The obtained results indicate that not all cases of are reported, that the subjects are familiar with the most common blood-borne diseases, and that situations of urgency and speed are both those that increase the possibility of injury with a sharp object. Furthermore, research respondents are of the opinion that needlestick injury represents a serious health issue.
In conclusion, a needlestick injury is a professional injury that is often overlooked. Nursing professionals are not aware of the importance of reporting injuries with a sharp object, the increase of which would certainly be influenced by the implementation of continuing education. It is necessary to conduct further research and raise awareness of the importance of this topic for employees of health care institutions.
