Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. The disease affects young people, at the productive age of 20-40 years old. Women are most often affected, 2-3 times more than men. The disease is characterized by chronic inflammation, demyelination, gliosis and loss of neurons. The disease can be divided into four main clinical subtypes: relapsing-remmiting multiple sclerosis, secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, primary-progressive multiple sclerosis and progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis. The development of disease is thought to be influenced by environmental factors, genetic factors and infectious factors. Multiple sclerosis is diagnosed by using magnetic resonance imaging, spinal tap, evoked potential test and blood test. Physiotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of multiple scelrosis. An integral part of physiotherapy in the treatment of multiple sclerosis is exercise. The symptoms that physiotherapist mainly deal with are: gait, balance, spasticity, flexibilty, coordination. The purpose of physiotherapy is to make the patient functional and independent again in activities of daily life.
