Abstract Prijelomi u području maksilofacijalne kirurgije često predstavljaju izazovne medicinske slučajeve s obzirom na vitalne funkcije ovog dijela tijela i njegovu estetsku važnost. Bolje razumijevanje tih ozljeda omogućuje unaprjeđenje zdravlja i kvalitete života pacijenata u budućnosti.
Abstract (english) Fractures in the field of maxillofacial surgery often present challenging medical cases given the vital functions of this body part and its aesthetic significance. This graduate thesis explores the epidemiology of mid-facial and lower jaw fractures, with a focus on the analysis of cases collected at Clinical Hospital Center Dubrava (CHC Dubrava) during the period from 2019 to 2023. A total of 281 patients were hospitalized. Fractures of the lower jaw and mid-face are common and frequently result from traumatic events such as traffic accidents, falls, or sports injuries. In this study, we analyzed the distibution of fractures regarding gender, age, cause, and types of injuries. This research can contibute to better understanding their nature and the need for proper treatment. Risk factors associated with the occurrence of these injuries are identified, which can aid in the development of preventive strategies. Based on epidemiological data, it is possible to develop injury prevention strategies, including education, traffic safety measures, and other interventions. Falls have emerged as the leading cause of these injuries. The aim of this research was to gain a deeper understanding of the epidemiology of mid-facial and lower jaw injuries to contribute to better treatment and prevention of these injuries. Through the analysis of available data, the study has provided important insights into the frequency, causes, and characteristics of these injuries. In conclusion, this research contributes to a better understanding of the epidemiology of maxillofacial injuries and suggests the need for additional preventive measures, particularly in older age groups and among males. A better understanding of these injuries enables the improvement of the health and quality of life of patients in the future.
