Abstract Potpuno implantabilni venski port kateter predstavlja potpuno zatvoreni intravenski infuzijski sustav namijenjen dugotrajnoj uporabi unutar ljudskog organizma.
Abstract (english) The fully implantable venous port catheter is a completely closed intravenous infusion system, intended for long-term use inside the human body. This sophisticated medical device is primarily used to administer highly irritating or hyperosmotic drugs, provide nutritional support, conduct blood transfusions, and take blood samples. Central venous catheters and implantable venous access systems have become extremely widespread, greatly facilitating access to the vascular system. In today's medical context, these advanced devices allow unobstructed access to the circulatory system to deliver a variety of therapies, including chemotherapy, intravenous fluids, pharmacologic agents, blood products, and parenteral nutritional support solutions.
The implantable venous port catheter is most often used in patients suffering from malignant diseases, which makes it a key element in their therapy. The installation of this catheter is performed surgically under general anesthesia or an interventional radiological procedure with local anesthesia. Often the device is positioned in the subclavian vein, located on the front of the chest. It is important to note that the implantable venous port catheter is removed after the end of long-term therapy or when it no longer fulfills its function.
Given its frequent use in oncology patients, nurses are expected to be trained and competent in the management of an implantable venous port catheter. Education of nurses on the correct use of this device is essential for both pediatric and adult patients. Handling an implantable venous port catheter requires specific skills and knowledge to prevent adverse events and complications. Nurses must be fully versed in all aspects of care, hygiene maintenance and recognition of potential complications that may arise.
The aim of this paper is to highlight key nursing aspects of care related to patients using an implantable venous port catheter. This topic is extremely important in the context of providing optimal health care and therapy to patients with malignant diseases.
