Inzulin je hormon nužan za regulaciju šećera u krvi, a proizvodi ga gušterača u svojim Langerhansovim otocima, što je njezina endokrina funkcija. Najpoznatiji oblici dijabetesa su dijabetes tipa 1 i dijabetes tipa 2, u trudnoći se može javiti gestacijski dijabetes, a javljaju se i neki rjeđi oblici dijabetesa kao što su dijabetes do kojeg dolazi zbog uzimanja određenih lijekova (npr. kortikosteroida), genetski poremećaji inzulinskog djelovanja ili funkcije β-stanica gušterače te dijabetes do kojeg dolazi zbog bolesti u egzokrinom dijelu gušterače.
Medicinske sestre imaju ključnu ulogu u skrbi za pacijente s dijabetesom te važnu ulogu u edukaciji pacijenata, stoga je važno da posjeduju znanja o različitim aspektima dijabetesa. Cilj empirijskog istraživanja provedenog u ovome radu bio je utvrditi jesu li studenti sestrinstva upoznati s različitim aspektima dijabetesa (klasifikacijom, faktorima rizika, komplikacijama, postavljanjem dijagnoze, terapijskim postupcima, ulogom pravilne prehrane...). Na temelju rezultata istraživanja, pokazalo se kako studenti sestrinstva imaju različite razine znanja o različitim aspektima dijabetesa koje variraju od aspekata za koje pokazuje iznimno visoke razine znanja do aspekata za koje pokazuju niske razine znanja. Međutim, svjesni su kako postoji mjesta za napredak jer svoje znanje procjenjuju pretežito ocjenom dobar te iskazuju da žele naučiti više o dijabetesu.
Abstract (english) Diabetes is the name for a set of metabolic disorders characterized by the appearance of hyperglycemia due to disorders in the secretion or action of insulin. Insulin is a hormone necessary to regulate blood sugar, and it is produced by the pancreas in its islets of Langerhans, which is its endocrine function. The most well-known forms of diabetes are type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes can occur during pregnancy, and there are also some rarer forms of diabetes, such as diabetes caused by taking certain drugs (e.g. corticosteroids), genetic disorders of insulin action or pancreatic β-cell functions and diabetes caused by disease in the exocrine part of the pancreas.
Nurses have a key role in the care of patients with diabetes and an important role in patient education, so it is important that they have knowledge about different aspects of diabetes. The objective of the empirical research conducted in this paper was to determine whether nursing students are familiar with different aspects of diabetes (classification, risk factors, complications, diagnosis, therapeutic procedures, role of proper nutrition...). Based on the results of the research, it was shown that nursing students have different levels of knowledge about different aspects of diabetes that vary from aspects for which they show extremely high levels of knowledge to aspects for which they show low levels of knowledge. However, they are aware that there is room for improvement, as they rate their knowledge mostly as good and say they want to learn more about diabetes.
