Abstract Iako je starenje gotovo univerzalna istina koju svi doživljavaju tijekom života, ključno je razumjeti i kliničku i epidemiološku važnost ovog procesa.
Abstract (english) Although aging is an almost universal truth that everyone experiences throughout life, it is crucial to understand both the clinical and epidemiological importance of this process. Aging brings about a series of changes in the entire spectrum of body systems, which require special care and management. Biologically speaking, aging is a chronic, normal culmination of the loss of specific regenerative and bioprotective mechanisms that occur in the body over time. Aging in itself is a physiological process, that is, a normal phase of a person's life, which begins at the moment of birth and ends at the moment of death. The care process in nursing homes has developed significantly over the last few decades. The demographics of nursing home residents have evolved over time, as has the proportion of the population seeking nursing home care. The coronavirus disease that emerged in Wuhan, China has had a catastrophic effect on the world, resulting in more than 6 million deaths worldwide. General data show that more than half of the people diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 virus infection are over 60 years old, a segment of the population that most often has more severe symptoms of the disease. The aim of the diploma thesis is to show, through a systematic review of the literature, how much and in what way the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health and well-being of elderly people who are placed in homes for the elderly. The searched literature was available in scientific and citation databases, which included PubMed, Google Scholar, Hrčak, Medline, Cochrane and ResearchGate. The roles of highly educated nurses in the care of the elderly in the COVID-19 pandemic include education, health care delivery, coordination of access to health services, health promotion for empowerment. Highly educated nurses are important people in the health system whose roles are to respond to the needs of patients and their families, especially among vulnerable groups, including the elderly.
