This paper, which contains a theoretical and practical part, will discuss laws and safety measures that should be followed in order to safely handle, store and transport hydrocarbons as refrigerants. The theoretical part describes the properties of hydrocarbons and the structure of the devices with such refrigerants. It depicts the areas where, and with which amount of the refrigerant, such devices filled with hydrocarbons can be stored, as well as minimal requirements for the detection and ventilation of those areas. The experimental part includes the study of European and Croatian laws. The graphs have been made in a program called REFPROP, which analyzes thermodynamic properties of refrigerants. The practical part is imagined as a visit to the firm “Oprema ureĎaji d.d.“ in Ludbreg. “Oprema ureĎaji d.d.“ does propane charging according to all current laws. The paper describes the charging areas, control, service line and the storage area, that is, their ventilation connected to propane detectors.
