Second language learning is becoming more and more important in the modern world as people need to know more languages in order to compete in the academic and business world. For this reason, it is quite important to investigate different learner characteristics which influence second language acquisition such as: age, motivation, anxiety, personality traits and cognitive styles. Additionally, motivation and age are one of the most prominent learner differences when it comes to predicting learning outcomes. For this reason, this thesis aims to investigate the attitudes of Croatian students towards learning English as a second language as well as the relationship between these two important factors regarding Croatian elementary and high schools. The method of investigation was the administration of different types of questionnaires in two elementary schools and two high schools in order to investigate the attitudes Croatian learners have towards learning English. The results of these questionnaires showed that Croatian students have a positive attitude towards learning English in both elementary schools and high schools. However, they also showed that this positive attitude decreases slightly as students get older and reach adolescence. Additionally, the answers provided by Croatian students showed that they use English on a daily basis even in informal settings, regardless of their age, and that they are eager to learn new languages.
