Abstract
This paper analyzes the connections between language and reality that can be found in David Harrower's play Knives in Hens through the dynamics between the three characters: Young Woman, her husband William and Gilbert the miller. Due to Young Woman's naivety and initial tendency to understand phrases literally, language's arbitrarity is shown and is then analyzed through different sources. Language is shown to be an artificial human product, created with an intent to symbolize reality. It requires a knowledge of cultural patterns in order to be fully understood. Its principles also differentiate from culture to culture, as society decides which terminologies are important, and the language's structure can influence the way a social group sees the world.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad analizira poveznice između jezika i stvarnosti koje se mogu naći u komadu Davida Harrowera Knives in Hens kroz dinamiku između troje likova: Young Woman, njen muž William i mlinar Gilbert. Zbog naivnosti Young Woman i njene početne sklonosti da shvaća rečenice doslovno, proizvoljnost jezika je pokazana i onda analizirana kroz različite izvore. Jezik je prikazan kao umjetni ljudski proizvod, stvoren s namjerom da simbolizira stvarnost. On zahtijeva znanje kulturnih obrazaca da bi bio u potpunosti shvaćen. Njegovi principi se razlikuju od kulture do kulture, budući da društvo odlučuje koje terminologije su bitne, a njegova struktura može utjecati na način na koji društvena grupa vidi svijet.
