- Imaju li marginalci neku skrivenu poruku?
Abstract (english) The aim of this thesis is to draw more attention to the analysis of the sideline characters in the epics genre. These characters are, therefore, not the main heroes nor are a part of the main plot of the epic in question. Thus, the objective of this analysis is to derive useful data about the parts these characters play. The desire of divulging the role that ordinary soldiers, servants, slaves and others play in such a long war had encouraged the emergence of different questions about these sideline characters. Some of the questions include:
- Do the sideline characters carry a hidden message?
- In which way does their relation to the main heroes portray the condition of the society of that time?
- Is there a deeper meaning disguised in the sideline characters that the author secretly wanted to convey?
- Do modern readers recognize the personality traits of the main characters more easily because of the sideline characters?
By discovering the answers to these questions, it has been established that these sideline characters give us a much clearer picture of the epic. They represent the author's tools which he uses to describe the state of the society, the problems and the controversies of that age as authentically as possible. By studying the sideline characters, we find out more about mental condition of the main heroes, as well as their desires, needs and urges. Therefore, the sideline characters are essential in such complex epics. They are understated, but still give an immense contribution to making the epic genre as perfect as possible.
