Tijekom predmenstrualne (lutealne) faze u mozgu dolazi do smanjenja razina serotonina, dopamina i endorfina, što rezultira promjenama u apetitu i raspoloženju.
Abstract (english) From the period of early adolescence to the late 40s, women's lives are marked with menstrual cycles. The average duration of menstrual cycles for most women is 28 days. During this period, numerous hormonal changes occur, primarily in estrogen and progesterone levels. The menstrual cycle can be divided into three phases: follicular, central and luteal phases. High levels of estrogen are characteristic for follicular phase, while in the early luteal phase we can find high concentration of progesterone. During the premenstrual (luteal) phase levels of serotonin, dopamine and endorphin decrease in the brain, leading to changes in appetite and mood. Women become more emotional and irritable with often mood swings. Also, in that period, women are more vulnerable to consumption and craving for special food. The aim of this study was to examine craving for chocolate through different phases of the menstrual cycle on craving for chocolate. The study included 80 women, average age of 22.9 years. In more than half women (57.5%), the average duration of the menstrual cycle was 26 to 28 days. 30% of women had a menstrual cycle of 29 to 31 days and 12.5% of women had menstrual cycle of 32 to 34 days. The following measuring instruments were used in the study: Chocolate Inventory (CCI), which measures chocolate craving and Emotional state scale. It was found that subjects in the follicular menstrual phase were happier than subjects in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and had a more pronounced component of emotional eating. Correlation of chocolate cravings and the current emotional state has not been found in this research.
