Abstract U ovom diplomskom radu obrađuje se problematika slobode medija u demokratizacijskim procesima u društvu, a posebno se istražio učinak prosvjeda održanog 21. studenog 1996. godine zbog oduzimanja koncesije Radiju 101.
Abstract (english) This thesis deals with the problematics of media freedom in democratisation processes in society in general, and particularly with the effect of the protests held on November 21st 1996, as a result of the revocation of Radio 101’s broadcasting licence. The thesis is divided in several parts: The introductory part presents the subject, the aims, the research questions and the scientific methods used. The following part presents the history of Croatian journalism before and after the appearance of electronic media, as well as the history of the radio itself. The thesis continues with the definition of democracy and its position in the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, the history of Radio 101 is presented, together with the facts addressing the protests aimed to reacquire its broadcasting licence under which it operated for many years. The thesis presents both the reactions and the consequences of the protest and the struggle for media democratisation in Croatia. The description of socio-political context of the examined period more closely presents the causes and the consequences of the state of the Croatian society of the period. Finally, the investigated prints are described and the results of the analysis, discussion and its conclusion attached. The purpose of this thesis entitled The Importance of Media Freedom in Democratisation Processes in Society – in the example of Radio 101 is to determine the scope and to analyse the contents of articles which deal with the problematics of Radio 101 from November and December 1996 in relevant daily and weekly printed media which at the time came out on the territory of the Republic of Croatia, as well as in their electronic versions. Research questions from the research part of the thesis are answered through both qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The following newspapers have been analysed: daily newspapers Vjesnik (Zagreb), Večernji list (Zagreb), Slobodna Dalmacija (Split) and Novi list (Rijeka); weekly newspapers: Globus and Nacional (printed u Zagrebu) and Feral Tribune (Split). The problematics analysed in this thesis is relevant regardless of the time span and relevant in order to understand the implications of media freedom in democratisation processes in Croatia and beyond. To conclude, the struggle for Radio 101 was not only the struggle to return the lost broadcasting licence to the beloved Zagreb radio station of the time, but also the struggle for democracy, for the right to vote and for media freedom in the Republic of Croatia.
