Abstract (english) | Emotional intelligence is construct in psychology, which has a great impact on the life of modern people, and therefore it's being a more often object of researchers’ focus, and its relation with various forms of addictions is particularly interesting. Although the relationship between emotional intelligence and addictions is still relatively undiscovered, so far links between lower emotional intelligence and addiction disorders have been established. This study aimed to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and of different addictive behaviors (drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, gambling, internet and addiction to exercise). The survey involved 338 participants, of whom 212 were women and 126 men, aged on average M=25.94, using following measuring instruments: Questionnaire of emotional competence (UEK-45, Takšić, 2002), Exercise Dependence Scale-21 (EDS-21; Hausenblas and Symons Downs, 2002) and questionnaire that consisted of questions tailored to this survey, where the responses indicated the frequency of addiction substance abuse.
The results obtained in this study indicate that more women smoke cigarettes and that more of them use and more frequently use social networks, while men are more likely to gamble and drink alcohol. Furthermore, differences were found between man and women in their ability to regulate and manage emotions, where men express better ability, but also men and women are equal in the matter of emotional competence, ability to perceive and understand emotions, and the ability to name and express emotions. Those who do not smoke cigarettes are better at regulating and managing emotions, while there is no difference in the emotional intelligence between those who consume drugs and those who don't consume drugs and those who gamble and those who don't gamble. Greater emotional competence and the ability to regulate and manage emotions are associated with more frequent gambling. If a person is more addicted to exercising, he/she has greater emotional competence, i.e., better ability to observe and understand emotions, better ability to express and name emotions, and better ability to regulate and manage emotions. |
