Abstract
Varieties of the English language today are a matter of pure existence only. People are aware of them but they do not dedicate much attention to their differences. When discussing British English and American English their differences are perceived throughout the way and manner the speakers of both varieties speak, taking into consideration their geographical positions as well. However, when analyzing a language in detail it is visible that there is a great amount of components that contribute to the above mentioned differences as well. This is the case of course with the grammatical system, spelling and pronunciation system, historical development of both British and American English as well as their relationship with other domains and subfields of the English language. This presents the real situation and shows that the differences between these varieties are much more complex than the average speaker of the English language perceives.
Abstract (croatian)
Danas su vrste engleskog jezika samo stvar postojanja. Ljudi su svjesni da te vrste postoje, ali njihovim se razlikama ne posvećuje previše pozornosti. Kada govorimo o britanskom engleskom i američkom engleskom njihove se razlike percipiraju na temelju načina na koji njihovi govornici pričaju, naravno i na temelju njihovih geografskih položaja koje se također uzimaju u obzir. Međutim, kada detaljno analiziramo određeni jezik vidljivo je da postoji veliki broj komponenti koje pridonose ranije navedenim razlikama. To je naravno slučaj s gramatičkim sustavom, sustavom pravopisa i izgovora, povijesnim razvojem kako britanskog tako i američkog engleskog kao i njihova povezanost za drugim područjima i potpodručjima engleskog jezika. Ovo prikazuje stvarnu situaciju te pokazuje kako su razlike između ove dvije vrste engleskog jezika puno kompleksnije u odnosu na one koje prosječni govornik engleskog jezika može percipirati.
