Abstract | Ovaj rad obrađuje temu VIII. |
Abstract (english) | This paper deals with the theme of the VIII Mediterranean Games that took place in Split and cities of the Games dispersion in 1979. This was also the largest organized sporting event on Yugoslavian territory hitherto. The importance of the VIII Mediterranean Games has importance on local, regional, state and international level as well as in the fields of sport, politics, economy, culture, turism, media, organization, technology, tehnical aspects and construction. The city of Split, as a part of the Socialistic Republic of Croatia, which was again part of the Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, has got the Mediterranan Games hosting after second candidature and thanks to it, it was positioned on the world sport map. Among all the influences which this manifestation had on the city and it local population, the most important was infrastructural and construction development that changed conditions of life as well as the city view. Altough the candidature was submitted by the city of Split, eight other cities were participating in the event, which was the novelty of its kind, and was eventually complimented on for its success. Within the VIII Mediterranean Games, a new financing system was presented, taking into account a specific existing economic system in Yugoslavia in general, which was manifasted mainly through self-financing altough it was not fully realized. VIII Mediterranean Games were innovative in other aspects as well, such as accomodation for direct and indirect participants in already existing accommodation capacities, special traffic solutions, new accreditation systems and innovative technological solutions. Innovative solutions have also been used in the VIII Mediterranean Games logo and flag design and implementation, which have been accepted as standard symbols of the Mediterranean Games. The sports part of the Games was presented with the largest number of organized sport competitions up to that time, not only at the past Mediterranean Games but also at the Olympic Games, which also gave importance to the Games itself. The whole event was well covered by the media, both locally and globally, as evidenced, among other things, by the launch of Mediteranpress, the official newsletter of the Games. Although the media coverage was an excellent promotion of the city of Split and the cities of dispersion, as well of the SR Croatia and the SFR Yugoslavia in general, its extent was at the same time based on the interest in Yugoslavia as a country with a unique political, economic and social system. Therefore, it is not surprising that the hosting of the VIII Mediterranean Games transcended the sports "borders", which made the Games itself much more important. |
