Abstract
This final paper sets out to explore how Irish novelist Edna O’Brien represents Irish womanhood and the formation of female identity in her groundbreaking work, The Country Girls Trilogy. It examines how O’Brien’s characters develop and change in the course of the three novels against a backdrop of mid-century Ireland and its extremely rigid and conservative ways of life. The family and Irish Catholic Church are especially in the focus of the paper as these are seen as the forces which had a tremendous influence on the formation of female identity in Ireland.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj završni rad nastoji istražiti kako irska spisateljica Edna O’Brien predstavlja irsku ženstvenost i formiranje ženskog identiteta u svom revolucionarnom djelu The Country Girls Trilogy. Rad proučava kako se O’Brienini likovi razvijaju i mijenjaju kroz tri romana u kontekstu Irske te njenog krajnje strogog i konzervativnog načina života sredinom dvadesetog stoljeća. Obitelj i irska katolička crkva su ponajviše u centru pozornosti ovog rada kao sile koje su imale ogroman učinak na formiranje irskog ženskog identiteta.
