Abstract Kao jedinstvena ljudska karakteristika, smisao za humor predstavlja imanentni i sveprisutni fenomen koji neporecivo prožima i oblikuje naše svakodnevne živote. Upravo koncept stilova humora omogućava ispitivanje odnosa adaptivnih i maladaptivnih stilova s određenim elementima mentalnog funkcioniranja.
Abstract (english) As a unique human characteristic, a sense of humor represents immanent and ubiquitous phenomenon that undeniably permeates and shapes our daily lives. In order to make a clear distinction between healthy and unhealthy forms of humor, Martin et al. (2003) introduce a novelty in the study of humor by proposing a classification which includes styles of humor: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating. This concept of humor styles enables examining the relationship between adaptive and maladaptive styles with certain elements of mental functioning. Another aspect of humor that has been the subject of previous researches concerns the study of sex differences in the use of humor, ie the preference of certain styles by men and women. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in the use of humor between men and women and to examine the relationship between humor styles and measures of self-esteem and subjective well-being: positive and negative experiences and life satisfaction. The study, conducted in the form of an online questionnaire, involved 214 respondents, with the proportion of women being 71% and men 29%. Respondents completed a set of four measuring instruments made up of Humor Styles Questionnaire, Rosenberg SelfEsteem Scale, Positive and Negative Experiences Scale, and Life Satisfaction Scale. The results show that men use an aggressive style of humor significantly more than women, while differences in the use of the remaining three humor styles were not found. Furthermore, it was found that the use of adaptive humor styles (affiliative and self- enhancing) is accompanied by higher levels of self-esteem and experiencing a greater number of positive experiences. In addition, results suggest that the use of self-enhancing style of humor was accompanied by significantly higher life satisfaction. In terms of maladaptive styles of humor, self-defeating style has been shown to be associated with lower levels of self-esteem, greater number of negative experiences, as well as lower levels of life satisfaction.
