Abstract Središnji je cilj ovoga rada istražiti odnose majki i kćeri, a potom predstaviti tipologiju njihovih likova u sljedećim romanima: Plodovi zemlje (1936.) Side Košutić, Kamen na cesti (1938.) Marije Jurić Zagorke, Svila, škare (1984.) Irene Vrkljan i Mramorna koža (1989.)
Abstract (english) The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the mother-daughter relationships and then to present a typology of their characters in the following novels: Plodovi zemlje (Fruits of the Earth, 1936) by Sida Košutić, Kamen na cesti (A stone on the road, 1938) by Marija Jurić Zagorka, Svila, škare (The silk, the shears, 1984) by Irena Vrkljan and Mramorna koža (Marble skin, 1989) by Slavenka Drakulić. The theoretical framework of the thesis will be outlined first, dealing with feminism and women's writing itself, its most important determinant, as well as with the very emergence of women's writing in Croatian literature. The second part of the theoretical framework will discuss the notion of motherhood and motherly practices in women's writing, with the emphasis put on mother-daughter relationships. The chapter that follows the theoretical framework will deal with the first part of the trilogy S naših njiva (From our fields) – the novel Plodovi zemlje (Fruits of the Earth). The character of Jela Borekova will be described as being „more a mother than a wife“, while Beta as „the ideal daughter“. It will be concluded that the characters of Jela and Beta Borekova are completely typified. Next, the novel Kamen na cesti is analysed and Marijana's mother will be determined as being „more a wife than a mother“, „the jealous mother“ and „the mother – marriage mediator“. The character of Mirjana will be described as being „the daughter who longs for mother's happiness“, while the younger sister Dorica as „the abandoned daughter“. The mother character in the chapter of „Svila, škare“ will be described as „the depressed mother“, „her daughters' daughter“ and as „neither mother, nor wife“, while the character of Irena is „the realistic daughter“. The last chapter of the central part of the thesis deals with the novel Mramorna koža (1989), where the protagonist’s mother will be determined as being „the mother and the wife“ and „her daughter's daughter“, while the protagonist herself will be described as „the aloof daughter“. Based on the examined novels, it will be concluded that each of the mentioned female writers approached the mother-daughter relationship pattern individually, and what is clearly noted is the similarity in using the typified characters in novels of the early 20th century, as opposed to the individualised characters in the novels Svila, škare and Mramorna koža.
