This bachelor thesis offers an overview of the relevant literature in the field of information sciences on the topic of fake news. The phenomenon of fake news is a very complex concept that cannot be unambiguously defined. One of the widespread definitions of fake news is that it is information that is presented as true, when in fact it is not a lie. Fake news has several essential features - it is always portrayed as news, it is untrue and made to misinform and deceive the world. The aim of this paper is to analyze, define and compare the concept of fake news and the concepts of misinformation as well as other types of fake news, and then show how they occur and in what ways they spread, and how to recognize them. This indicates the seriousness of this phenomenon, which poses a danger to individuals and society as a whole. The paper pays special attention to the roles of the libraries and other information institutions in providing access to verified information, and especially discusses their role in education and information, IT and media literacy programs for users. The last part of the paper presents possible technological solutions and tools that help in the fight against the spread of fake news.
