The object of the thesis’ is port of Split, and the thesis also discusses the general geographical features that influenced on its development. Key feature in the development of the port of Split was favorable geographical position of Split in the central east coast of Adriatic Sea as well as favorable climate and hydrology of Split and adjacent area. Also thesis considers rather complicated historical development and highlights the fact that commercial connection of Split with hinterland made an important contribution to the port’s development. Statistically, number of passengers and vehicles is increasing which is proof of the port’s development. Port of Split is leader in passenger transport among Croatian ports and it is the 4th largest passenger port in the Mediterranean. This thesis also presents guidelines for possible further development of the port of Split and its integration in Croatia’s traffic system. Also environmental protection of the harbor area is emphasized as one of the key features of future development of the port of Split.
