Abstract
Today, foreign language (FL) anxiety is considered as one of the most important affective factors which directly influences the process of second language (L2) learning (Young 1990; MacIntyre & Garnder 1994; Dewaele 2013). The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of language anxiety among Croatian and Spanish university students of English. Furthermore, this thesis attempted to investigate whether there are differences in perceived anxiety between Croatian and Spanish university students. Horwitz et al.’s (1986) three-factor model of foreign language (FL) anxiety, which is comprised of communication apprehension (CA), test anxiety (TA), and fear of negative evaluation (FNE), was used. The results showed that both groups reported moderate levels of FL anxiety. Descriptive analyses seem to indicate that Spanish students were more anxious than Croatian students with regard to all three factors. However, comparison analyses revealed a significant difference between the two groups of students on the CA scale. A t-test revealed that Spanish students showed significantly higher levels of FL anxiety compared to Croatian students on this scale. Although significant differences were not found on the TA and FNE scales, certain items within each of these factors revealed interesting differences between groups.

Nelagoda pri korištenju stranog jezika danas se smatra jednim od važnih faktora koji utječu na učenje inog jezika (Young 1990; MacIntyre & Garnder 1994; Dewaele 2013). Cilj ovoga istraživanja bio je utvrditi stupnjeve nelagode kod grupe hrvatskih i španjolskih studenata anglistike. Također, cilj je bio i utvrditi postoje li razlike u doživljenoj nelagodi između dvije grupe studenata. U ovome istraživanju koristio se trofaktorski model jezične nelagode koji su razvili Horwitz, Horwitz i Cope (1986), a koji se sastoji od nelagode prilikom komunikacije, ispitne anksioznosti te straha od negativne društvene evaluacije. Rezultati su pokazali da su obje grupe izrazile umjeren stupanj jezične nelagode. Deskriptivna analiza otkrila je da su, u usporedbi s hrvatskim studentima, španjolski studenti osjećali viši stupanj nelagode u odnosu na sva tri faktora. Ipak, komparativnom statističkom analizom utvrđena je značajna razlika između grupa studenata za skalu koja označava nelagodu prilikom komunikacije. T-test je pokazao da su španjolski studenti izrazili značajno viši stupanj jezične nelagode u usporedbi s hrvatskim studentima na ovoj skali. No, iako značajne razlike nisu utvrđene za skale ispitne anksioznosti i straha od negativne društvene evaluacije, analiza pojedinih čestica unutar ovih faktora otkrila je zanimljive razlike među grupama studenata.
