Abstract (english) Jacopo Sansovino spent his early period of creativity in Florence and Rome where he became acquainted with classical principles of Bramante’s architecture and his circle. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, he went to Venice in search of work. Even though he was known as a sculptor upon arriving in the new city, he quickly found a job as an architect and a builder in the service of the Procurators of St. Mark. For the new employers, he built the St. Marcus Library and Loggetta situated across Doge’s Palace on the west side of the Piazzetta. In the same square, he built the new mint building, Zecca. Sansovino has correctly executed concepts of classical architecture and ancient classical orders, on the three buildings mentioned, in accordance with Vitruvius’ principles. Furthermore, he used the rustication of Doric order for Zecca, emphasizing its industrial and economic function creating the impression of an impenetrable, solid, and robust fortress. For the facade of the new library, the center of knowledge and humanistic education he used Doric and Ionic order. He implemented the Doric order to emphasize the commercial function of the ground floor and solid foundations of the ancient knowledge upon which the library rests, however, he used Ionic order that has neither the Doric solidity nor Corinthian luxury, during the construction of the library situated between Zecca and Loggetta, to create the impression of elegance. Loggetta was reflected by the most lavish and richest Corinthian order, which fits meaningfully into the ceremonial function of the building itself. Sansovino’s three buildings in Piazzetta have transformed the square into a classic and monumental space modeled after ancient Roman imperial forums. By introducing the classical language of architecture into Venice, based on Rome, Sansovino adapts the style to the local tradition to create a more luxurious and richer variant of classical Roman style and incorporate it perfectly into already picturesque Venetian scenery.
