Abstract (english) The firefighter is a specific, risky, dangerous profession that is part of first responders. Previous occupational stress research among firefighter samples in Croatia and the rest of the world have not examined the DRIVE model. Therefore, this study aimed to examine selected DRIVE model hypotheses on a sample of Croatian firefighters. Participants were 168 professional firefighters who work in different fire departments in Croatia. They completed the following questionnaires: Personal Information Questionnaire, Brief Resilience Scale, Karasek Job Content Questionnaire, Mental Health Inventory and Job Satisfaction Scale. The results of path analysis show the direct effect of psychological demands and resilience in the explanation of job satisfaction and mental health. Lower levels of psychological demands and higher levels of resilience directly contribute to higher levels of job satisfaction and mental health. Resilience is a moderator in the relationship between psychological demands and job satisfaction. At higher levels of psychological demands, firefighters with higher levels of resilience are more satisfied with their job than firefighters with lower levels of resilience. In comparison, at lower levels of psychological demands, there was no difference in job satisfaction between firefighters with higher and lower resilience levels. Furthermore, resilience moderates the relationship between social support at work and job satisfaction. At higher levels of resilience, firefighters with higher levels of social support at work are more satisfied with their job than firefighters with lower levels of support at work. In contrast, at lower levels of resilience, firefighters with lower levels of social support at work are more satisfied with their job than firefighters with higher levels of social support at work. It was also found that firefighters at higher job positions report higher levels of mental health compared to firefighters at lower job positions. The study results suggest the importance of designing and implementing programmes to strengthen resilience and introducing psychologists as a new job post in professional firefighter departments.
