Međutim, nisu utvrđene spolne razlike u optimizmu, socijalnoj podršci članova obitelji, prijatelja i susjeda i ukupnoj socijalnoj podršci. Nadalje, mlađe stare osobe imaju manji broj bolesti te daju bolje samoprocjene zdravlja. Također, mlađe starije osobe imaju bolju socijalnu podršku prijatelja i susjeda kao i ukupnu. No, nije utvrđena dobna razlika u optimizmu i socijalnoj podršci članova obitelji.
Abstract (english) Aging represents regular changes that happen as a function of age, which leads to the decreasing of various functions of the human organism. It is not unusual that in the older stages of life different health issues may occur. These issues can greatly influence the change in one's life quality. The word 'health' stands for complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, but it does not refer only to the absence of disease and disability. In addition to this, a lot of research denotes the importance of different psychosocial variables, such as optimism and social support, during the process of older people coping with health problems. Optimism is characterized as a person's tendency to expect positive results in the future while belittling the possibility of the occurrence of negative results. Furthermore, social support is a form of support that one can get during social interactions. This research aims to examine the connection between optimism, social support, and health in the older stages of life and to test gender and age differences in these constructs. There were 540 elderly people included in this research. All of them live in a home of their own. The results were gathered via the pen-and-paper questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of a Life Orientation Test-Revised - LOT-R, an adjusted Social support scale, and questions that examine the type and number of chronic diseases as well as self-rated health. This research showed that women show more health problems in comparison with men while men show a more positive self-assessment of their health. However, no difference between men and women was discovered regarding optimism and social support of family members, friends, neighbors, and social support in general. In addition to this, this study shows that younger old people are objectively in better health and have a more positive assessment of their health. Moreover, the younger old people have better general social support and the support of their friends and neighbors compared to older old people. However, the study did not reveal any age difference when it comes to optimism and social support of one's family. Additionally, optimism shows a moderately positive correlation with subjective health while the correlation between optimism and number of diseases was significant and negative, but low. Additionally, subjective health correlated significantly positively, but lowly with social support from friends and neighbors. However, this research did not find evidence of a relation between subjective health and social support of the members of one's family and social support in general in older people.
