Abstract (english) The Dark Triad is a construct made of three conceptually independent, but interrelated personality traits at the subclinical level: Machiavellianism, subclinical psychopathy and subclinical narcissism. Although there has been an increase in the attention devoted to these traits in recent years, relatively little importance has been given to their relationship with depressiveness and life satisfaction. Depressiveness refers to a wide range of states and symptoms present in different numbers and with different durations, while life satisfaction refers to a cognitive determinant of subjective well-being. The correlation between these two constructs is negative to the extent that they can be considered opposite poles of the same dimension. Recent research has shown an increase in the prevalence of depressive symptoms among students. These symptoms are associated with negative outcomes that can have an adverse impact on academic, social and emotional adjustment. Considering these facts, the inconsistency of study results regarding the relationship between the Dark Triad, depressiveness and life satisfaction, as well as the importance of personality traits for understanding depression, it is crucial to examine the relationship between these constructs. Examining their relationship can also be of great importance to the development of counseling and psychosocial interventions aimed at the students’ mental health. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the relationship between the Dark Triad traits, depressiveness and life satisfaction in a sample of university students. The correlational study was conducted on a sample of 189 female and 53 male students (N = 242) from different universities in Croatia. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between Machiavellianism and subclinical psychopathy with depressiveness, while a negative correlation was found between Machiavellianism and subclinical psychopathy with life satisfaction. When it comes to subclinical narcissism, the results indicated the opposite pattern of a relationship with depressiveness and life satisfaction when compared to the other two Dark Triad traits. The results may have significant implications for the planning of appropriate interventions targeting university students who score high on the Dark Triad.
