Abstract This paper addresses the concept of “fallen men” during the Victorian era, which has been neglected to some extent due to the attention given to the restrictions placed on women. The analysis focuses on the various types of transgressions committed by the three main protagonists of the television series Penny Dreadful. Since it is neo-Victorian fiction with Gothic and detective elements, the series is an appropriate source for such an analysis. The paper begins by discussing these elements and proceeds to define the concept of the “fallen man” in comparison to his female version. Afterward, it positions the three main characters, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and Sir Malcolm Murray, as “fallen men” because of various acts that are considered transgressive by the highly critical Victorian society. The young scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein represents transgressions related to a lack of sexual drive and irreligion (atheism). In contrast, the beautiful and wealthy Dorian Gray commits various types of “immoralities,” including unusual sexual acts, displaying homosexual tendencies, and having a relationship with a transgender person. Finally, the third protagonist, Sir Malcolm Murray, fails to fulfill his marital and parental duties, which marks him as “fallen.” The analysis highlights the differences in the transgressions each character commits that classify them as fallen. In this way, it illustrates that both women and men lived under the constraints of Victorian rules and restrictions.
