Abstract
With the increase of globalization, migration, travelling, tourism, the Internet and social media, multilingualism and multiculturality can be increasingly observed in Pula as well as all around the world. When communicating online as opposed to face-to-face, the language choices and varieties of Pula’s youths might prove to be different. This study aims to investigate how young multilingual people from Pula communicate online as opposed to in real life. The communication of young multilingual people from Pula on various social media sites and/or messaging applications such as Instagram and WhatsApp could provide more information on language choice and preference when it comes to online discourse versus face-to-face communication. These applications have been selected because they are popular among the younger generations and all users are allowed and can choose to comment in any language they please, therefore the study might prove to be a useful source of data for further research in multilingual practices in Pula and Istria. The obtained results will then be analyzed through comparison with previous research on the multilingual practices of users on various social media platforms (Lee, 2016), and a few other which should help determine whether online communication differs from real-life communication in terms of languages used, codeswitching, language choice, language preference, etc. among the young people of Pula.
Abstract (croatian)
Uz porast globalizacije, migracije, turizma, popularnosti interneta i korištenja društvenih mreža, višejezičnost i multikulturalnost sve se češće primjećuju u Puli kao i u ostatku svijeta. Pri online komunikaciji mladi ljudi Pule možda će pokazati drugačije korištenje jezika i dijalekta naspram komunikacije uživo. Ovome istraživanju cilj je pokazati kako mladi ljudi u Puli komuniciraju licem u lice naspram online komunikaciji. Komunikacija mladih Puležana preko aplikacija poput Instagrama ili WhatsAppa mogla bi pružiti bolji uvid u izbor jezika i njihovu sklonost prema određenim jezicima prilikom komunikacije u online sferi naspram komunikaciji uživo. Ove aplikacije odabrane su zbog svoje popularnosti među mladima i mogućnosti komunikacije na bilo kojem jeziku te će zbog toga ovo istraživanje možda pružiti korisne informacije za buduća istraživanja o višejezičnim praksama mladih u Puli i Istri. Dobiveni rezultati će se zatim analizirati kroz usporedbu s prijašnjim istraživanjem o višejezičnim praksama korisnika na određenim društvenim mrežama (Lee, 2016), te još nekim istraživanjima koja će pomoći dokazati razlikuje li se uistinu online komunikacija mladih u Puli od komunikacije uživo po korištenim jezicima, prebacivanju kodova, izboru jezika, jezičnoj pristranosti, itd.
